Japanese Yokai

Inktober 2019

When I finally came to Japan for a long-term stay in autumn 2019, I was excited to find out that I rented an apartment at the famous Yokai Street in Kyoto.

I have always wanted to visit that street, as it combines the traditions and folk tales with the locals’ creativity. I wanted to make a series of the most common yokai within my area.

When October came around, I decided to use the daily drawing challenge by Jake Parker to commit to several quick illustrations of the yokai I meet everyday. Since 2017 I loved to take part in the Inktober challenge, so this was an exciting pair up.

The results are as presented in this gallery, all 20 pages of my travel sketchbook, telling a story of the fearsome and wondrous Japanese yokai.
